A crossover, crossover SUV or crossover CUV is a type of SUV, which is manufactured as a vehicle with a one-piece frame structure. Crossovers are usually based on a platform shared with cars, rather than a platform shared with station wagons.

Hyundai Nexo is the only crossover which is equipped with a hydrogen fuel cell. It is not like Mazda CX5 or Nissan Rogue, but more like other fuel cell cars such as Honda Clarity and Toyota Mirai. The infrastructure to support fuel cell vehicles is limited to a few areas, especially California. Nexus supplements the fuel with hydrogen, which is then fed into the fuel cell on board to generate electricity.

Its electric motor has an output power of 161 horsepower. Only the front wheels are driven because there is no all-wheel drive. Unlike other electric cars sold today, it is estimated that it can be refueled for 380 miles in about 5 minutes. Hyundai Motor provides Nexo customers with free hydrogen fuel or US$15,000 for three years. The base price of Hyundai Nexo is $60,000.

Jeep Compass:

Crossoversare generally known for their off road function. There is no doubt that this is not Jeep Wrangler, but Compass is somewhere between the Renegade small car and Cherokee and is equipped with a slow crawler tractor. The standard inline four-cylinder engine has 180 horsepower. Without much speed, the six-speed automatic transmission on front-wheel drive models is outdated. Even the nine-speed automatic transmission in the four-wheel compass feels a bit numb when accelerating, given its massive power. The interior materials are as good as Honda CRV or Mazda CX5. Although the Compass has 27 cubic feet of cargo space at the rear; if that’s what you want, plus the other two inches of legroom in the second row of the Jeep, choose a Cherokee that costs a few thousand dollars more.

Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross:

The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross would be updated in 2022 with a new look. The 8.0-inch touch screen and single-window tailgate would replace the original double-chamber panel used previously. It has the same power system, a 1.5-liter turbocharged in-line engine with a power of 152 horsepower. You can add all-wheel drive to any trim level for $1,600. All Eclipse Crosses are now standard.

Driver assistance features include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection and lane departure warning. Passenger space is about average, but rear cargo space is limited, only 23 cubic feet. Eclipse Cross is definitely getting attention now, but to truly stand out in this highly competitive market segment, more features are needed.

Kia Sportage:

The Kia Sportage with its unique appearance should not be confused with anything else. Sportage is in the middle of the Kia’s SixSUV series. It is larger than the Seltos compact car, but smaller than the Sorento 3. A six-speed four-cylinder with 181 horsepower is standard. Automatic gearbox, front-wheel drive, 8.0-inch touch screen and various auxiliary drive functions. The Sportage SX Turbo starts at less than $35,000 and is equipped with a 240-horsepower four-cylinder turbo engine, LED headlights, sports suspension and 19-inch wheels. The disadvantage is that the fuel economy is mediocre. The total fuel consumption of the turbocharged front-wheel drive Sportage is 23 mpg.

Ford Escape:

New Ford Escape looks more like a car than its predecessor, which is not surprising, because the latest Escape should help fill the gap left by several Ford’s discontinued models, including the Focus sedan, Fusion and Taurus.  It has two gasoline engines to choose from, such as gas hybrid and plug-in hybrid. The 2.5-liter gasoline engine with two electric motors has an EPA rating of 41 mpg. We like the refined handling of the Ford Escape as well as the spacious interior and modern style. Its main disadvantage is that the internal materials are poor, and the starting price is slightly higher than the price provided by the basic escape.

Nissan Rogue:

New Nissan Rogue is a significant improvement over the crossover it replaces. Nissan has noticed the details and sophistication that the latest Rogue lacks, with better fit and better interiors, as well as many standard and optional features. A 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine equipped with a CVT is standard, but Nissan announced that it has added an option with a turbocharged three-cylinder engine to improve fuel economy. This should be done by the end of this year.

With the rear seats folded down, there is now more passenger space and more cargo space. Another major improvement is a better engine and a less annoying CVT. The Divide Hide cargo system can divide the rear cargo space into adjustable areas under any circumstances and is now only standard equipment for top-level SL and Platinum equipment.

Ford Bronco Sport:

Ford Bronco Sport is the only car on this list with a built-in tailgate bottle opener. Their appearance matches their skills. Although they are different, Bronco Sport and Escape use the one platform. A three-cylinder turbocharged engine with a power of 181 horsepower. It is a standard configuration, and a more powerful 245-horsepower four-cylinder engine is also provided. (1) Both are equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The car has an 8.0-inch touch screen with Ford Sync 3 infotainment system, including Apple Car Play and Android Auto connections. Bronco Sport Badlands finished second in our latest compact crossover test.

Honda CRV:

The Honda CRV is not the most sporty or attractive compact crossover. Each non-hybrid CRV is equipped with a 190-horsepower four-cylinder turbo engine. The hybrid car combines a four-cylinder gasoline engine and two electric motors, with a total power of 212 horsepower, and comes with standard all-wheel drive.

The CRV’s rear cargo space is 39 cubic feet, and the rear seats are folded to 75 cubic feet, so it has plenty of interior space. LX is equipped with a 5.0-inch screen, but all other models are equipped with a 7.0-inch touch screen, integrated Apple Car Play and Android Auto. Each CRV also has a number of standard safety features, such as frontal collision warning and automatic emergency braking, Lane departure warning and active cruise control.
